Covent Garden Removals Health and Safety Policy

Covent Garden Removals is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers and members of the public who may be affected by our moving and relocation activities. This Health and Safety Policy sets out our approach to identifying, managing and reducing risks associated with removal, packing, loading, transport and delivery services within our service area.

The company recognises its responsibilities under relevant health and safety legislation and industry standards. We will maintain and continually improve our systems to protect people, property and the environment from foreseeable harm arising from our operations.

Health and Safety Objectives

Our primary health and safety objectives are to:

Prevent accidents, injuries and work-related ill health associated with removal activities, lifting and handling, driving and site work.

Provide and maintain safe equipment, vehicles, tools and work systems.

Ensure that all employees receive appropriate information, instruction, training and supervision.

Promote a positive health and safety culture where all staff take responsibility for working safely and reporting hazards.

Comply with all applicable health and safety laws, regulations and recognised best practice relevant to removals and transport operations.

Management Responsibilities

Senior management at Covent Garden Removals is responsible for implementing this policy and ensuring that adequate resources are made available to achieve high standards of health and safety performance.

Management will:

Regularly review health and safety risks associated with our services, including domestic moves, commercial relocations and storage work.

Establish and maintain safe systems of work for packing, lifting, carrying, loading, securing loads and unloading.

Ensure that vehicles and equipment are maintained in safe working condition, with appropriate inspections and servicing.

Provide risk assessments and method statements for higher risk activities or complex sites where required.

Consult with employees on health and safety matters and encourage suggestions for improvement.

Investigate accidents, near misses and incidents to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.

Employee Responsibilities

All employees of Covent Garden Removals share responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others who may be affected by their work. Employees are required to:

Work in accordance with company procedures, training and safe systems of work.

Use equipment, vehicles and personal protective equipment correctly and report any defects immediately.

Follow safe manual handling techniques and use lifting aids or request assistance when required.

Report hazards, unsafe conditions, near misses and accidents without delay to their line manager or supervisor.

Cooperate with management in implementing health and safety measures and attending training.

Not misuse or interfere with anything provided for health, safety or welfare.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Covent Garden Removals will identify and assess significant risks associated with our typical work activities across our service locations. These include, but are not limited to:

Manual handling of furniture, appliances and heavy or awkward items.

Use of removal vehicles, driving in urban and residential areas and loading bays.

Working in customer premises, shared buildings and public areas.

Use of trolleys, ramps, lifting straps and other handling equipment.

Working on staircases, narrow access routes and at vehicle loading heights.

Where risks cannot be eliminated, they will be reduced to the lowest practicable level through planning, appropriate equipment, supervision and staff training. Site-specific assessments will be made when necessary, especially for larger moves or where there are unusual access or building conditions.

Manual Handling and Ergonomics

Manual handling is a core element of removals work and is treated as a key risk area. The company will:

Provide training in safe lifting, carrying and team-handling techniques.

Encourage the use of mechanical aids, trolleys and protective equipment to minimise strain.

Plan jobs to reduce unnecessary carrying distances and awkward movements.

Rotate tasks where possible to reduce the risk of musculoskeletal disorders.

Vehicle Safety and Driving Standards

Our vehicles are central to our operations and will be operated safely at all times within our service area. Covent Garden Removals will:

Ensure all drivers are competent, hold the correct licences and receive regular training.

Carry out routine vehicle checks and maintain vehicles to required safety standards.

Plan routes to minimise risk, taking account of local traffic, access and parking restrictions.

Ensure loads are properly packed and secured to prevent movement during transit.

Promote safe driving practices, including adherence to speed limits and rest breaks in line with regulations.

Customer Premises and Public Safety

We recognise our responsibility to protect customers, building occupants and members of the public during removal operations. To achieve this, we will:

Assess access routes, entrances, stairways and lifts for safety and suitability.

Use warning signs, barriers or temporary controls where there is a risk to others in shared or public areas.

Take steps to prevent trips, slips and falls caused by equipment, packaging or debris.

Communicate clearly with customers about any safety considerations relating to their move.

Training, Information and Supervision

Covent Garden Removals will provide employees with training appropriate to their role, including induction training, manual handling, equipment use, vehicle safety and site-specific procedures where necessary. Refresher training will be provided periodically and when work methods or equipment change.

Supervisors will monitor working practices, ensure compliance with safety procedures and provide guidance and support to their teams.

Monitoring, Review and Continuous Improvement

This Health and Safety Policy will be monitored on an ongoing basis and formally reviewed at regular intervals, or sooner if there are significant changes to legislation, our operations or identified risks. Findings from audits, inspections, accident investigations and staff feedback will be used to improve our health and safety management system.

Covent Garden Removals is committed to continual improvement in health and safety performance and to maintaining high standards of care for employees, customers and the wider community across our service area.
